Clear Aligners Q & A

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are custom-made orthodontic devices that address crooked teeth and bite problems. Like braces, clear aligners place gradual pressure on your teeth to shift them into alignment. The main difference is that braces are visible when you open your mouth, and clear aligners are not. They’re transparent, removable, and mold to the shape of your teeth.

ClearCorrect

ClearCorrect is a type of clear aligner made with ultra-thin plastic materials for a tight grip. While treatment times for ClearCorrect are typically longer than MTM aligners at 8-14 months* on average, they may address more advanced orthodontic concerns.

The Capitol Premier Dental Group team may recommend clear aligners if you have crooked teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite.

What are the benefits of clear aligners?

Clear aligners offer many benefits when compared with traditional braces, such as:

Appearance
Clear aligners use translucent materials that conform to the natural shape of your teeth for a discreet appearance. Unlike braces, clear aligners never draw attention to your teeth.

Oral hygiene
While the brackets and wires of braces can obstruct your teeth and make them hard to clean, clear aligners are removable. You take them out to brush and floss, which protects against decay and gum disease.

Gum disease protection
Teeth that fit together properly are easier to clean than crooked teeth. They also place excessive pressure on the teeth, which can wear down the enamel. Clear aligners straighten your smile to protect your teeth, gums, and supporting bone.

Comfort
The brackets from braces can irritate the tissues inside your mouth. Clear aligners are smooth and won’t lead to cuts and sores.

Time
Clear aligners can straighten teeth and correct malocclusions (bad bites) in as few as 3-18 months*, while braces take about 18-36 months*.

After a comprehensive dental exam that includes digital X-rays, the team can recommend the best type of clear aligners to address your concerns.

What can I expect from clear aligners?

During your first appointment, the team takes impressions of your teeth to create your custom-made aligners. They use these impressions to design your treatment plan. Once your aligners are ready, the team provides detailed instructions on how to use them.

You should wear your clear aligners for at least 22 hours a day. You receive a new set every 2-3 weeks. It’s important to brush and floss after every meal to protect your teeth and care for your aligners.
